Home » Filter Cartridges

Filter cartridges are critical protective components within gas turbine air intake systems. Because gas turbines ingest vast quantities of air during operation, the presence of sand, dust, salt spray, industrial soot, or moisture can cause compressor blades to suffer from erosion, fouling, and corrosion—particularly salt-induced hot corrosion of superalloys. These issues can severely reduce power generation efficiency and even lead to catastrophic failures.

Description

A gas turbine is an internal-combustion power machine that converts thermal energy into mechanical energy by using a continuous flow of gas as the working medium to drive an impeller at high speeds. It holds a pivotal position in modern aviation propulsion, large-scale marine vessels, industrial power generation, and distributed energy systems, and is hailed as the “jewel in the crown” of the equipment manufacturing industry.

Structural Breakdown

Located at the very top, this high-elasticity gasket ensures a 100% airtight seal between the filter cartridge and the dust collector’s tube sheet , preventing fine dust from bypassing the filter.

Sturdy galvanized steel, stainless steel end caps, securely encased the top and bottom of the pleated filter media, providing structural rigidity while ensuring precise alignment during installation.

Positioned both on the inner core and the outer surface, these expanded metal grids prevent the pleated fabric from collapsing under heavy negative pressure or expanding/bursting during high-pressure pulse-jet cleaning.

The functional heart of the cartridge. By pleating this synthetic media, the effective filtration area is expanded exponentially. The flame-retardant treatment prevents sparks (common in welding or cutting applications) from igniting the dust collector.

Shape Configurations

In practical installations, the following combinations are commonly used to optimize airflow distribution and increase dust holding capacity.

Conical + Cylindrical Combination

The most classic setup. A conical cartridge is positioned at the front with a cylindrical cartridge at the rear. The conical design helps guide the airflow, facilitates dust release during gravity and pulse-cleaning, and expands the intake face area.

Cylindrical + Cylindrical Pair

Provides an exceptionally large filtration area, making it ideal for standard, square-shaped filter houses.

Filter Media

The choice of filter media directly determines cartridge performance based on different environmental conditions and filtration efficiency classes.

Media TypePerformance CharacteristicsTypical Applications
SyntheticHigh mechanical strength, excellent water resistance, large dust holding capacity, and highly cost-effective.General industrial zones and rainy/humid environments.
Cellulose/Blended (Wood Pulp)Traditional and economical media, usually flame-retardant treated, offering good structural rigidity.Arid, inland regions with ambient dust concentrations.
Nanofiber CoatingFeatures an ultra-fine nanofiber web (~200nm diameter) layered onto a base substrate. It achieves surface filtration, making pulse-cleaning extremely easy.Desert, arid, and dust-storm-prone areas.
Microglass / HEPAExtremely fine fibers offering ultra-high efficiency (up to E11 – H13 classes) and superb hydrophobicity. It provides excellent static interception.Coastal zones with heavy salt spray, high humidity, or plants requiring ultra-clean air.
